2026SANEA Symposium

Resilient by Design

Leading the Shift · Embedding Resilience

9–10 September 2026 · The Tryst, Kramerville, Sandton

This year we turn ambition into action, bringing together the people, ideas and institutions shaping a South African energy future that is sustainable, secure and shared.

01 — The Shift

Guiding Inclusive Energy Progress Through Resilience

Resilience has too often been viewed as a response to disruption rather than a principle that shapes progress. As South Africa's energy landscape continues to evolve, resilience must be intentionally designed into the systems, partnerships and decisions that will define our energy future.

Building a resilient energy ecosystem requires collaboration across the full energy spectrum, bringing together diverse perspectives, informed leadership and shared purpose to navigate complexity and guide inclusive energy progress.

02 — Why this moment matters

We are standing at a defining crossroads, asking infrastructure to perform far beyond its original limits.

01
Strained delivery
Persistent skills shortages and stretched infrastructure.
02
Rising costs
An increasingly volatile global economy.
03
Greater complexity
Uncertainty deeper than anything we've navigated before.
04
Affordability vs. capital
The widening gap between price and the investment a low-carbon future demands.
05
Jobs and livelihoods
Protecting people while pivoting to new technologies.
06
Workforce reskilling
Equipping people for a digital, decentralised grid.

In this environment, resilience is no longer a nice-to-have. It is a prerequisite for progress — the ability to adapt under pressure, absorb disruption without crumbling, and recover quickly when things go wrong. Our success won't depend on the absence of disruption, but on how well we function in spite of it.

03 — A Call for Leadership

More than a technical hurdle. A leadership challenge.

Courage over planningJudgment over coordinationAccountability in action

True leadership today means building institutions that don't just withstand pressure — they learn from it. Organisations that adjust in real time, evolve, and grow stronger through what they endure.

It's not enough to bounce back. We are building an antifragile system — one designed not only to withstand crises, but to learn, evolve, and thrive.
